چکیده

Computational storytelling, in both games and the larger field of interactive media, offers a wide range of new narratological forms that are otherwise impractical–or impossible–to create. A variety of systems push at these possibilities, but largely the potential narratological complexity outpaces our human ability to effectively author for them. Because of this, authors are limited not so much by the technology, but the daunting task of content creation that leverages the full affordances of the system. We posit a critical component of authoring for these systems involves visualizations of the work’s emerging shape and dynamic state, and offer an illustrative case study of a viz for a dynamic choice-based narrative system currently under development.

Towards a Computational Model of Narrative Visualization

The task of narrative visualization has been the subject of increasing interest in recent years. Much like data visualization, narrative visualization offers users an informative and aesthetically pleasing perspective on “story data.” Automatically creating visual representations of narratives poses significant computational challenges due to the complex affective and causal elements, among oth...

Constructing Narrative Visualizations as a Means of Increasing Learner Engagement

Increasingly visualization systems are using storytelling to present complex data. However, many approaches neglect enabling users to independently explore details within the story. The research presented in this paper provides an overview of the implementation and discusses the evaluation of a novel framework (VisEN), which aims to allow users to construct narratives containing multiple explor...

Visualizing Narratives

A narrative is an ordered sequence of connected events, usually involving multiple participants. Most existing visualization techniques represent narratives as a node-link graph where a sequence of links shows the evolution of causal and temporal relationships between characters in the narrative. These techniques make a number of simplifying assumptions about the narrative structure, however. T...

People, Places and Emotions: Visually Representing Historical Context in Oral Testimonies

This paper presents visualizations to facilitate users’ ability to understand personal narratives in the historical and sociolinguistic context that they occurred. The visualizations focus on several elements of narrative – time, space, and emotion – to explore oral testimonies of Korean “comfort women,” women who were forced into sexual slavery by Japanese military during World War II. The vis...

Cooperative visualization: a design case

In this design case, the design of visualization tools to support the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) is described. A participatory approach to visualizing a complex computational pipeline was adopted, with the goal of exploring what benefits might be derived when groups of people visualize complex information for themselves. Direct participation in LIGO activities he...
